In January 2017, MTN Ghana, Ghana’s biggest Telecommunications networks launched MTN mobile money popularly called MTN MOMO on July 21, 2009 under the leadership of MTN Ghana’s then Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Brett Goschen, after discussions with critical stakeholders.
The has seen tremendous improvement from day to day with introduction of mtn QR payment, ATM withdrawal, payment for goods and services ( momo pay)
In Ghana, mobile money has opened access to financial services for millions of people for the first time, strengthening the payment ecosystem and deepening financial inclusion which is why mtn the pioneers in this field has been accoladed.
Nothwinstanding the simplicity of the service has given fraudsters the opportunity to dupe customers through many means including text messages.
Many of the victims of mobile money fraud lamented on the poor response to reports made to Mtn on the issues hence the new initiative by Mtn which will take effect 1st of February, 2021.

Kindly be informed that effective February 1, 2021, customers will be required to present a valid national ID card (I.e. passport, voter’s, driver’s license etc.) when performing any MoMo transaction at a MoMo agent point.
Also, please note that ID number and Id type has been included in the process flow for cash out transactions. Thus, when an agent is performing a cash out for a subscriber, the agent is required to select the ID type and enter the ID number of the ID card the subscriber provides. This new update will also take effect on February 1. Kindly find attached the process flow for the update.
